The Creams of the Crop

One of the unpleasant and unfortunate side effects of incontinence is red, chapped skin, also known as dermatitis. The seal created by a well-made and properly working diaper can keep sweat and other liquids close to the body, causing this uncomfortable (and unwanted) result.
If you or a loved one is dealing with incontinence, a high-quality cream should be a part of your daily self-care practice. But with such a wide variety of products available, it can be difficult to determine which one is right for you. Generally speaking, creams serve one of two purposes: they either create a protective barrier or their ingredients help nurture and heal damaged skin. Depending on your needs and preferences, one will help you in your pursuit of relief.

Protective Barrier Creams
These products create a waterproof or water-resistant barrier over the skin to prevent moisture from coming in contact with the body. Common ingredients include zinc oxideglycerin, or silicone and silicone-based compounds like Dimethicone. Keep in mind that some creams may include latex or petrolatum, so if sensitivities or allergies are an issue be sure to read the product information carefully before use.

In the market for protective creams? Try TENA ProSkin Barrier Cream, Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream, or Coloplast Sween 24 Dimethicone Cream .

Nurturing/Healing Creams
These creams (sometimes called lotions) deliver ingredients that soothe and repair already-damaged skin while helping to prevent future discomfort. Vitamins A and E are often included as active ingredients, due to their healing properties, as well as emollients such as lanolin and mineral oil to hydrate thirsty skin. One thing to remember is that the moisturizing properties of these creams may prevent tape from adhering; wash your hands after application and before fastening briefs to prevent contamination.

To help heal rough or raw skin, try  Coloplast Sween Cream or Coloplast Sween with Natural Vitamin E (Unscented) .
